Mooveez or when movies entertain and teach a language

There are a thousand “proven” ways and methods that promise to teach you a foreign language – school, language courses, webinars, apps… Is there even a space for innovation in such a competitive environment? Sure there is!

Movie – more than 1 000 teachers

Scandinavian countries were an inspiration for the authors of this innovation. Scandinavia stands out in terms of English knowledge. Almost every northerner speaks excellent English because they watch movies and fairy tales in the original language with subtitles from early childhood. Before they even start studying English at school, they already have a rich passive vocabulary that is simply activated later in the classroom.

That’s why their English is so beautiful, lively, and colorful. Mooveez uses this principle, improves it, and applies it to other languages and in other countries.

Instead of drilling vocabulary and filling out endless exercises, Mooveez brings a natural and joyful teaching method. Thanks to its methodology and tools, the main characters in movies become language teachers. Users gradually adopt the movie’s language and learn entire phrases in context, which is much more effective than memorizing words and grammar rules.

Mooveez was awarded Digital Innovation of the Year by the British Council in 2016, winning the main prize at the London finale against hundreds of projects worldwide.

Direct People on the scene

The app saw fast user growth. However, its creators from Archimedes Inspiration Company had bigger ambitions, so they joined forces with us two years after launch.

We focused on growth hacking – a method that regularly tests hypotheses from analysis, interviews, and user observation. This helped us identify weaknesses in converting users into paying clients. Based on these findings, we tested targeted changes to eliminate weaknesses and shift user behavior.

The ultimate goal was to bend up the growth curve by implementing small, simple steps. And that’s what we did. We tripled the number of people who actively used the app after downloading it. The changes also boosted the app rating to 4.2, which continues to grow.

What’s in the sequel?

The app currently teaches 5 languages in more than 40 countries. It has been downloaded by 180,000 iOS and Android users, of which over 3,000 are paying members.

The creators are now focusing on further development in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Russia. Their goal is to increase paying members fivefold in the coming months and double the share of trial-to-paid conversions within the next two years. Expansion to Germany is also planned.
